Besties, Food & Durham

Food is for eating, and good food is to be enjoyed… I think food is, actually, very beautiful in itself. -Delia Smith

My best friend / soul sistah Ella and I have known of each other since we were toddlers. We bonded in high school during GCSE Science and the rest has been history. Ella studies in Durham and over the course of our degrees I have been able to visit her and this beautiful city several times. Ella and I both love good food and our most recent trip revolved around eating out and cooking some great food. So if you’re ever up North or want some food inspo, read on!

Flat White Kitchen

We headed for brunch on Saturday morning following Durham’s parkrun (which is a great course and friendly atmosphere!). Flat White Kitchen can be found on Saddler Street, and it is an extremely popular place to eat. It’s easy to see why. Its clean aesthetic and tasty food is every instagrammer’s dream. You may have to queue as it’s quite small, but it is so worth the wait and we were seated within 10 minutes.

Green plants, simple crockery and delicious food combine to produce a great eating out experience.

We tried the eggs Florentine, half stack of mango and coconut pancakes, the peanut and pistachio slice,  and the avocado on toast. This was accompanied with the BEST chai latte and a carrot, orange and ginger juice which makes you feel like #health instantly. I would recommend each and every one of the dishes we tried. The total bill came to £13 each for 3 of us– which is incredible value for such fantastic food!

Hangover recovery, Veggie Style

On the Saturday night, we attended the 21st Birthday of the lovely Ruthie, who lived and plays rugby with Ella. It was a really special evening, after which we headed out to sample Durham’s night life (3 jagerbombs for £5- up ur game Bristol). Needless to say food was ESSENTIAL Sunday morning. Ella is a vegetarian and I’m a flexi (I eat meat if it’s cooked for me but won’t cook it for myself).

OMG Fran what’s that!

  • Sautéed mushrooms seasoned with garlic salt (find it with the rest of the spices and seasoning).
  • Tesco’s corn loaf,
  • Cauldron’s Veggie sausages
  • Wilted spinach with a dollop of sweet chilli sauce
  • Guacamole (Smash your avocado with salt, pepper and lemon)
  • Soft boiled egg
  • Potato croquettes (Frozen section 4 life)
  • And baked beans seasoned with garlic salt.

Combine the above to produce the best recovery imaginable!

Monkey Business

Whilst in Durham, I managed to catch up with my lovely friend Camilla, who I worked with in South Africa last summer. We have a shared passion for primatology and peanut butter and it was great to catch up with her!

We headed to Esquire’s for avocado on toast. This was a very friendly cafe with a glass front for people watching.

It turns out Flat White also has a beautiful sister cafe. Fuelled with my love of the peanut butter and pistachio slice, I shared this beauty with Camilla. You have to try this! Happy happy days. Durham- I’ll be back soon!
